What is Megamentin?
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called penicillins. Amoxicillin fights bacteria in the body.
Clavulanate potassium is a form of clavulanic acid that is similar to penicillin. Clavulanate potassium fights bacteria that is often resistant to penicillins and other antibiotics.
The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections.
Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium can also be used for purposes that do not result in this drug.
Megamentin indications
Oral: Behandlung von Infektionen, die durch Amoxicillin-resistente Organismen verursacht werden, die & bgr; -Lactamasen erzeugen, die gegenüber Clavulansäure empfindlich sind.
Upper respiratory tract infections: otitis media, tonsillitis, sinusitis.
Lower respiratory tract infections: bronchitis (caused by amoxicillin-resistant β-lactamase-producing E. coli, H. influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae), pneumonia.
Urinary tract infections: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis.
Skin and soft tissue infections.
Megamentin formulations are also effective in treating infections caused by amoxicillin-sensitive organisms at the appropriate dose of amoxicillin, since in this situation the clavulanic acid component does not contribute to the therapeutic effect.
Injection: treatment of urinary tract infections, otitis media, respiratory infections, enteric infections, gram-negative septicemia, other surgical infections, gonorrhea.
Prevention and treatment of infectious endocarditis. Treatment of infections caused by strains of bacteria that produce penicillinase.
Megamentin description
Co-amoxiclav is the British approved name for the combination of antibiotics that contains amoxicillin trihydrate, a β-lactam antibiotic, with potassium clavulanate, a β-lactamase inhibitor. This combination results in an antibiotic with an increased spectrum of activity and restored effectiveness against amoxicillin-resistant bacteria that produce β-lactamase.
This name, unlike co-trimoxazole, is not widely used and the combination product is usually referred to by various names such as amoxicillin with clavulanic acid or amoxicillin + clavulanate or simply by a trade name such as EXCLAV (from NeoMedD), HECLAV, -625 (from Mascot), Twinox (from USV) CLAMP (from FGP), Synermox, Augmentin (from GlaxoSmithKline, formerly Beecham), Tormoxin Clav (India) or Clavamel.
