Vemox 250 (Amoxicillin) is a medium-spectrum antibiotic for cats and dogs belonging to the class of penicillin. This drug inhibits the growth of bacteria by preventing the bacterial cells from forming walls. Amoxicillin should only be used to treat bacterial infections, not viral and parasitic infections.
Amoxicillin comes in the form of trihydrate, which is the active ingredient in these capsules. Amoxicillin easily spreads into all body tissues and fluids, with the exception of the brain and spinal fluids, creating wide coverage.
PRECAUTIONS
This antibiotic for dogs and cats should only be used in cases where there are bacterial infections. It should not be used in animals that are hypersensitive to penicillin and in animals raised for meat, as amoxicillin is the protein binding agent in nature. Amoxicillin tablets are contraindicated with certain drugs such as allopurinol and erythromycin. Capsules are slow to dissolve so it could take some time for the pet to show palpable signs of improvement.
DOSAGE
Vemox 250 (Amoxicillin) is available in 250mg and 500mg capsules. The recommended dose of amoxicillin in dogs and cats is 5-10 mg / pound every 12-24 hours. Amoxicillin can be given with or without food because it is stable in gastric conditions.
SIDE EFFECTS
Amoxicillin capsules could cause insulin allergic reactions in some animals that could have symptoms such as rash, fever, swelling of the face or limbs, breathing, rapid heartbeat, and imbalance. Overdose can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, while abnormally high doses can lead to acute oliguric kidney failure or hematuria. Other side effects from using amoxicillin include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that need urgent medical attention.
