What is Fempro used for?
Fempro 2.5mg tablets are used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women and are used as a first line therapy for breast cancer that has been discovered in an advanced or metastatic (spread outside the breast tissue) condition. Fempro 2.5 mg tablets are also used as an additional or adjuvant treatment for early breast cancer in conjunction with another tamoxifen breast cancer treatment, or when tamoxifen therapy did not help prevent the tumor from getting worse.
How does Fempro work?
Fempro 2.5 mg tablets contain letrozole, which is a powerful and highly selective inhibitor of aromatase, an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of the female hormone estrogen. In premenopausal women the primary source of estrogen production is the ovaries and it is involved in producing secondary sexual characteristics, such as breast development and in regulating the menstrual cycle. In postmenopausal women, when estrogen production by the ovaries stops, low levels of estrogen in peripheral tissues such as fat cells throughout the body, including some breast cancer cells, are carried out by converting androstenedione (made by the adrenal glands) to estrone formation on the action of aromatase and then others Conversion to estradiol (the most active form of circulating estrogen). Many breast cancers have estrogen receptors and their growth is stimulated by estrogen; Low levels of estrogen may be enough to sustain breast cancer cell growth in women with breast cancer. Letrozole in Fempro tablets 2.5 mg blocks the action of aromatase, prevents the formation of estrogen and helps prevent the growth of estrogen-dependent breast tumors.
