Finasteride (Propecia) and Minoxidil are the only drugs able to fight against hair loss and fight androgenetic alopecia. Both drugs are approved by the FDA.
The drug that interacts with 5-alpha reductase prevents the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. Dihydrotestosterone is the main culprit in hair loss in androgenetic alopecia. Scientific studies have shown a reduction in dihydrotestosterone in the scalp of 64% and 69%, respectively, for 40 days of treatment with finasteride 1 mg / day and finasteride 5 mg / day.
Does Finasteride Really Work For Hair Loss?
In most of the cases examined, an effective decrease in the values in the blood and the resulting reduction in dihydrotestosterone in the scalp favors a stop of hair loss and, in some cases, a regrowth with gradual disappearance of the thinning.
Results and finasteride
After one year of treatment in about 50% of men between the ages of 20 and 40 there is a stop of hair loss, while the remaining 50% there is some regrowth. Only 1% of the cases the treatment is ineffective or even need to stop because of side effects of some concern.
Finasteride was found to be more effective in the front of the head in relation to the vertex.
Unfortunately, it must be taken into account that the benefits are retained even after long-term use of finasteride, and can only be retained for an indefinite period of time through continuous therapy.
