Proscalpin (Finasteride) is used to relieve symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH). It is also used for the treatment of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).
How it works
Finasteride belongs to a class of drugs called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into the more powerful androgen, dihydrotestosterone. This leads to a reduction in prostate size with an improvement in urinary flow rate and obstructive symptoms. It also reduces androgen activity in the scalp, which stops hair growth.
dosage
Always follow the doctor's instructions about the dosage and duration. As monotherapy;
For benign prostate hyperplasia: 5 mg / day.
For male pattern baldness: 1 mg / day.
As combination therapy:
For benign prostate hyperplasia: 5 mg / day with doxazosin (alpha blocker).
