Methandienone is an oral steroid that is commonly known by the name Anabol or Danabol. It is structurally unstable with the ability to flavor and thus become functionally useless. It is famous for its very powerful anabolic and androgenic effects in the body. It is preferred over many other commercially available steroids because of its ease of administration. It is taken orally while other steroids must be injected intramuscularly and so daily visits to the doctor are required in the latter case.
Anabolic effects of methandienone are on protein metabolism, where it prevents loss of proteins from the body and helps their accumulation. This action ensures adequate protein storage in the muscles, increasing the person's muscle mass and increasing muscle strength. It also allows a sufficient amount of glycogen to be stored in the body. Androgenic effects are beneficial for men where they also add muscle strength and reserve. However, such effects are not preferred by women because of issues such as facial hair, widening the clitoris, deepening the voice, etc.
In addition to its beneficial effects, methandienone has several side effects that have sufficiently diminished its popularity over the past decade. One of the most notable is fluid retention. Fluid retention causes swelling of the body (edema), which is especially prominent in the facial area. In addition, methandienone has an alkyl group attached to the alpha carbon that increases its hepatotoxicity. Long-term use of methandienone changes liver function abnormally and liver function tests can be seriously disrupted.
